{Mardi Gras 2012: The Parades}

I'm gonna be honest with y'all, I used to think of Mardi Gras as this wild event. Although there are probably some areas in New Orleans that gets crazy, ie Bourbon Street, my friend Ra has showed me a different light of what Mardi Gras is. It is actually a very family and kid friendly event. We all pretty much watched all the parades on St. Charles. Ra's aunts worked at one of the hotels at St. Charles and gave us convenient access to restroom. Her Aunt also prepared food for our group. It was really awesome and we felt so welcome!

Hermes and Krewe d' Etat parades are held the Friday before Fat Tuesday.Hermes' theme was "Rubaiyat," drawing float titles from a 1,000-year-old collection of Persian poetry.
Le Krewe d'Etat chose "d'Etat Tells It Like It Is," combining New Orleans songs with current events for a series of biting, larger-than-life jokes.

Our family's first parade beads' catch.
To say that our kids, loved it would be an understatement. They had so much fun and quickly caught on the concept of catching beads after the second and third float. The people on the floats love kids. They make it a point to hand out goodies to children. Samantha was loving all the stuffed animals that they were throwing to her. What a great first night for us! The kids were all exhausted after two parades.
Toth parade is usually on Saturdays but it was rescheduled to Sunday due to rain. This is the most family friendly parade among all the parades that we've been to. Ra's family also invited us to one their friend's neighborhood party. What a great way to experience Mardi Gras! Their friend's home is located in the area where the floats were getting set up before the big parade.
The kids sitting at the steps and watching the floats line up.
William thought the marching bands were so cool.
A quick family photo op in front of the Americana float.
We are forever thankful to this family for sharing with us such a beautiful family tradition!
The kids were so excited when the first float rolled in. Thoth's theme this year is "Street of New Orleans".
Ed and I first saw the 610 Stomper band on TV at the Macy's thanksgiving parade. It was so neat to see them in person. They are hilarious!Fleurty girls rockin' it out!
One of the biggest Mardi Gras parade is Bacchus. Bacchus rolled on Sunday evening with actor Will Ferrell reigning as Bacchus XLIV.
I love evening parades. The floats are so beautiful with all the lights. Theme for Bacchus this year is "Bacchus celebrates the Louisiana Bicentennial."Beautiful ladies! Love them.Smaller children are perched on special seats bolted onto ladders to make sure they're safe and able to see what's going on. William and Jackson got to borrow one of these and was having a ball watching the parade within eye level. Because they are easily visible to the float riders, they were getting more beads from all the floats.
Ed and William enjoying the special "seats" in the house!
What a great time it was! We had so much fun sorting our loot and reminiscin' the parades that we got them from.

Love all the Mardi Gras pictures! Where do you guys live?
Yes, people don't realize that it is actually very family orientated in the Uptown area of town.
I grew up in S. Louisiana and went to school at LSU.
